Answers to frequently asked questions
BHR is a progressive (Reform) Jewish community. Reform Jews value the civil and intellectual achievements of modernity and emphasize the ethical content of Judaism. As a progressive community Beth Hillel recognizes equal rights and duties to women and men. In synagogue women and men share the same environment. Women can study to be ordained rabbis and can follow precepts that are traditionally reserved for men. Beth Hillel is also active in promoting minority rights and welcomes everyone, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. LGBT + people and same-sex couples are therefore welcome.

After admission, candidates residing or domiciled in Rome will follow a conversion path (ghiur) which lasts eighteen months. The ghiur includes the following compulsory activities: attendance of courses, study, participation in the religious, cultural and social activities of the community.
At the end of the course the candidate will have to take a final exam conducted by 3 rabbis and which will take place at the Bet Din (rabbinical court) of the European Union for Progressive Judaism.
Admission to Bet Din is subject to attendance of the community’s religious, cultural and social courses and activities, as well as the achievement of an adequate level of knowledge of the Jewish language, culture and tradition. Male candidates are also required to be circumcised.
After Bet Din, mikveh (ritual immersion) is required for both females and males.
Ghiur katan is provided for children of patrilineal Jewish families, after an interview with the Rabbi and with the Governing Council.
For patrilineal Jews, there are personalized paths for the reconfirmation of Jewishness and, if necessary, a study path for conversion.
