Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.

TOT SHABBAT & SHABBAT SHALOM PASSPORT

These are special services on Saturday mornings made especially for kids aged 2-10 with songs, games and activities for a playful approach to Shabbat - it's fun!

We are also excited to announce an extension of Tot Shabbat, a new version of our program for older children, ages 7 to 10, Shabbat Passport! Review prayers, get comfortable leading, learning and focusing on selected topics in a more mature way.

SCUOLA GIORGIO COEN

Our school, founded 10 years ago, now boasts almost 40 children ages 2-13. We focus on contributing to a Jewish identity, learning mitzvot, social ethics, Tanach, history, Hebrew language, prayers, and the many faces of Judaism that exist in our families, in Rome, and around the world.

BAR/BAT MITZVAH

Training and requirements are overseen by our Cantor and Rabbi.

At least five years of study at our Religious School or a comparable school is the recommended minimal requirement to celebrate becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah at Beth Hillel, subject to review by the Director of our school. The teachers begin to teach Torah trope (cantillation) in the 5th and 6th grades and then most students begin to study one-on-one with a qualified lay leader at least 6 months before becoming b’nai mitzvah. Students and parents meet as a group and individually with the Rabbi and students study their Torah portions and prepare divrei Torah with our Rabbi.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah candidates are encouraged to participate in school, services and create a Social Action program for Tikkun Olam. This is a voluntary program that provides young people with an opportunity to perform community service. This experience can help students gain a sense of compassion and social responsibility that are part of being a Jewish adult.
